What is Mulesoft?

MuleSoft is a popular integration platform, provides a unified and flexible approach to connecting different applications, systems, and data sources. It particularly enables seamless integration of Salesforce with other applications and systems, which helps organizations to streamline their business processes, improve data quality, and enhance customer experiences.

MuleSoft Features:

Here are the steps to integrate Salesforce with MuleSoft:

Connect to Salesforce: The first step in integrating Salesforce with MuleSoft is to connect to Salesforce. This done using MuleSoft’s Salesforce connector, which provides out-of-the-box integration capabilities.
Design Integration Flows: Once connected to Salesforce, developers use MuleSoft’s visual interface to design integration flows that map data between Salesforce and other systems and applications. Significantly done using MuleSoft’s data mapping and data transformation capabilities.
Create APIs: It enables the creation of APIs, used to expose data and functionality from Salesforce to other systems and applications. This enables organizations to leverage the data and functionality within Salesforce in new and innovative ways.
Monitor and Manage Integrations: MuleSoft provides a range of tools for monitoring and managing integration flows, including real-time dashboards, alerts, and notifications. This enables organizations to proactively manage their integrations and ensure data is transferred accurately between systems.

Understand end-to-end business requirements

Plan discovery and requirement gathering sessions with the customer/business stakeholders, as well as the Salesforce and MuleSoft teams. In these sessions, work to understand the problem you’re trying to solve, business use cases, and integration use cases, expected SLAs, and agree on guiding principles of integration patterns.

Segregate responsibilities

It is critical to understand which data and integration requirements are handled by Salesforce and which are handled by MuleSoft. Clearly define how data will flow and where data transformation will take place.

For example:

MuleSoft will fetch data from a third-party system, transform x, y, z data elements, convert the data to JSON, and insert/upsert it into Salesforce objects.
Salesforce will automate further data processing on the data saved by MuleSoft.

Finalize security settings between Salesforce and MuleSoft

There are multiple ways to integrate Salesforce with MuleSoft, such as the Salesforce adapter provided by MuleSoft, or calling MuleSoft APIs within Salesforce, or platform events. Regardless of the method, be sure to choose the right security level per your org’s policy.

The below diagram shows an example of the security method needed for MuleSoft’s Salesforce connector. OAuth 2.0 provides better security/options security compared to basic authentication.

While calling MuleSoft API from Salesforce code, choose the highest possible security level as well. MuleSoft provides a variety of security options.
